Guest: Galadhrim Sentry by Cúlinwen

"I had never known anything but the Golden Wood; the lands beyond the edges of Lothlórien were closed to me, just as the borders themselves were closed to any outsider who dared to venture under the eaves of the forest.  The wardens of Lórien were ceaseless in their vigilance, their eyes keen and their hands swift and silent on the drawstrings of their bows. They were the guardians who kept this hidden land safe, who preserved its sacred and changeless nature as if to defy the passing of the ages."
  ~ Cúlinwen Amarath

This outfit is gentle and practical at the same time. You would never spot the sentry before lying on the ground with an arrow pierced through your heart. That is if you would be the enemy of course - elves of the Golden Wood welcome friends and cherish them. However, those who mean harm to the forest are tracked down and driven away, by all means necessary.

  1. combinations like this are extremely common/simple. whilst nice its hardly different enough from the hundreds of other outfits like it to merit its own post.

    1. Simplicity often says a lot more than extravagance, and the story behind the outfit may often be more important than the "common" pieces used to create it. With all due respect, it's clear that others disagree with you about this outfit's "merit". Culinwen cared enough to create this outfit, take some very nice screenshots, and offer it as a guest submission, and the wonderful Frey chose to feature it. There really is no call to degrade either of those decisions by saying the outfit isn't worth being seen.

On a lighter note, awesome job, my dear Culi. I'll be careful where I step. =P

    2. i was curious what reactions will this comment provoke :) my opinion is closer to Kemendin's, but anyhow, i want to emphasize that negative comments are also appreciated (and i encourage others to critique my own posts as well), because they provide very valuable input necessary to improve :)

what i love about outfitting is that every outfit finds its fans, because there are as many different tastes as there are people looking at the posts. so thanks even for negative comments (and i hope Culinwen takes it the same way :).

    3. Thank ye kindly to those who have responded to this outfit. Perhaps it would help if I clarified a bit of what I look for when creating my cosmetics -

While there are many fantastic cosmetic pieces to be had in LOTRO, for me, the challenge is creating something that I personally can envision in Tolkien's Middle-earth. There is a subtle beauty in finding outfits that can and do look like they jumped right out of Middle-earth - outfits that are perhaps 'plain', but utilitarian and ultimately suit the landscape they are drawn from. While there are certainly instances of elaborate outfits among the Elves and the high-born of Gondor and Rohan, I also like to look at the other side of things.

The Elves of Lorien are generally clad in grey; therefore, I sought to find a match of pieces that would indeed be suitable for a Galadhrim sentry - simple, and subtle, and perfect for the hunting of Orcs!

    4. This is an interesting discussion, especially in light of the impromptu poll I took the other day about what makes a great outfit. Uniqueness was the #3 choice, but the most popular criterion was that the outfit tells the character's story.

Anyway, I think it's a nice-looking outfit. Maybe what Anonymous was reacting to is that the pieces are all quite new and therefore being displayed by a lot of people at the moment?

  2. Very good well-camouflaged outfit. You can just imagine that person blending into the shadows and being invisible in plain sight, beneath the trees on the border of Lothlorien.

I remember my kinmate Carlfrid offering to show me the way into Lothlorien. "Follow me", he said, and ran into the trees. I followed and - swish! swish! swish! - fell down full of arrows! "Oh, haven't you done the quest?", he said.

    1. Hehe, I can totally picture that happening with Carlfrid.. XD

I agree with you and above comments, the camouflage effect of this outfit is superb.

  3. I love this outfit. Simplicity for me is what generally makes a great outfit. Just like you said, this looks like a practical, lore specific outfit that a sentry would be wearing on the borders of Lorien. Not some circus get-up with bells and whistles. That is generally how I design outfits for my hunter. I try to think: "what would he be wearing if he were trying to move through the forests in Mirkwood?" Bravo!
